How a Residents' WhatsApp Group Turned Into a Standing Clean-Up Partnership

A little over a year ago, a member of one estate's residents' association reached out after seeing our work at a neighbouring compound, asking whether we could help clear a persistent dumping spot near their gate. That single request has since turned into one of our steadiest ongoing partnerships.

What made the difference was not just the initial clean-up, but the residents' association's own WhatsApp group, which our Organizing Secretary was added to. New dumping incidents get reported and photographed within the group almost as soon as they happen, rather than accumulating for weeks before anyone flags them to us.

That fast reporting loop has changed how we schedule our own quarterly rotation for this particular estate. Instead of a single large clean-up, we now run smaller, more frequent interventions there, catching problems while they are still manageable rather than letting them grow into full dumpsites.

The residents' association also handles a lot of the coordination work that used to fall entirely on us: confirming volunteer turnout, arranging access for tools, and following up with any household whose waste keeps ending up in the wrong place.

We are now actively encouraging other estates and residents' associations across Donholm to set up similar direct lines with us, since this one partnership has consistently produced faster, better-targeted clean-ups than our standard outreach alone.
