Illegal dumping sites rarely appear overnight. They usually start with one or two bags left on an empty plot or riparian strip, and grow because nobody reports it before it becomes an established habit for the whole area.
The most effective reports include a specific location, ideally with a landmark or nearby plot number, a photo if it is safe to take one, and a rough sense of how long the dumping has been happening. Vague reports like 'somewhere near Umoja' are much harder for anyone to act on than a precise one.
For sites on riparian land or within public green spaces, our Riparian & Green Space Advocacy work means we can often raise it directly with Nairobi County or NEMA alongside our own clean-up scheduling. For smaller, private-plot dumping, a report to the local chief's office or Nairobi County's waste management line is usually the faster route.
It also genuinely helps to report before a site grows large. A single bag of waste is a five-minute fix; an established dumpsite with months of accumulated refuse can take an entire clean-up day and heavy equipment to clear properly.
If you are unsure which route to take for a specific site, send us the details through our contact page and we will point you to the right authority, or add it to our own clean-up roster if it fits what we can realistically handle.
