Talking to Donholm's Youth About Environmental Work as a Real Skill

When we talk to young people in Donholm about getting involved with our nursery or clean-up programmes, the first hurdle is usually not interest, it is the assumption that this kind of work is purely charitable and has no real skill or income attached to it.

That assumption is not entirely wrong, most of what we do is unpaid volunteering, but it undersells what a season or two of consistent involvement actually teaches. Nursery work builds real horticultural knowledge: propagation, soil management, pest identification. Clean-up coordination builds logistics and people-management skills that transfer directly to event and project work elsewhere.

We have started being more explicit about this when recruiting, framing nursery and landscaping involvement as a genuine entry point into green livelihoods rather than just community service. A few of our most consistent youth volunteers have already turned that experience into paid landscaping and compound-maintenance work for households and estates around Donholm.

None of this replaces formal training, and we are careful not to overstate what a few months of volunteering can guarantee. But it does mean the conversation with a prospective young volunteer is now less about persuading them to give up a Saturday for free, and more about what they stand to gain alongside the community benefit.

We are working on formalising a short mentorship track for youth who want to go further, building on what our existing nursery team has already picked up informally.
